It all started in 2014. During September of that year the cable laying ship Rene Descartes brought a fibre optic cable from Mull through the Passage of Tiree to within a few hundred metres of the shore at Scarinish. Amid much excitement the cable was brought ashore by divers. In the ensuing months the cable was connected into the telephone exchange and laid across the island to various cabinets. Just this week it has been announced that Tiree Community Broadband has been awarded £80,000 to upgrade the current wireless network. The planned upgrade will take full advantage of the fibre optic connection available since 2016. The cottage will benefit from this improved service with speeds of up to 10Mbps from July.
